Shizuoka Japanese Sencha Green Tea

Sencha Green Tea

Shizuoka Sencha Green Tea is a smooth, refreshing loose leaf tea that is true to the Japanese tea culture. This tea is grown in the Shizuoka region of Japan, which is where over half of all Japanese tea is grown. Interestingly, Japan only exports 1-2% of their tea, making this Shizuoka Sencha a rare treat.

Japan Green TeaThe word "sencha" refers to the method in which the tea leaves are dried. In China, the green tea leaves are pan seared, then tightly rolled to create gunpowder green teas. In Japan, the tea leaves are given a quick 20 second steam bath before they are air dried. This fast steaming process elevates the refreshing flavor of the green tea leaves.

The color of brewed sencha tea is a vivid greenish golden color. Depending upon the temperature of the water that the tea was brewed in, the flavor will be different. Very warm water will release a mellow, lingering flavor. Hot water will create a more astringent flavor that is cleansing.

Drink this tea between meals to help cleanse your palette. Green teas are very refreshing and loaded with antioxidants.

Our hearts go out to the entire country of Japan, devastated by an earthquake and tsunami March 11, 2011. Kungaloosh will make a $2.00 donation for every single bag, and a $4.00 donation for every double bag of Shizuoka Japanese Sencha Green Tea sold during 2011.

Donations will be made to the Red Cross, one of the first organizations on the scene to help the Japanese people during this crisis. If you would like to help, please visit the Red Cross website at www.redcross.org.

The Perfect Cup of
Shizuoka Japanese Sencha Green Tea:

Iced tea-brewing method: (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 6 teaspoons of tea into a large teapot. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea and let it steep for 5 minutes. Fill a serving pitcher a quarter of the way up with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher while straining the leaves. Add ice and top the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. [A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to double the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water]. Please note that this tea may tend to go cloudy or ‘milky’ when poured over ice; a perfectly normal characteristic of some high quality black teas and nothing to worry about!
